Torrevieja bets on more sustainable urban transport with 32 hybrid and electric buses
Torrevieja has awarded the new urban transport service to Avanza Movilidad Levante, with an investment of €67.8 million and a fleet made up of 32 hybrid and electric buses.
The City Council formalized the contract following a tender process carried out in recent months. The concession will last for 10 years and will enable the modernization of the public transport system through new routes, more sustainable vehicles, and the incorporation of technological advancements.
The decision was approved by the Local Government Board, as explained by councillor-secretary Federico Alarcón. The agreement represents an 18% reduction compared to the initial budget of €82.7 million, bringing the total to €67.8 million over the duration of the contract.
Among the improvements proposed by the company—at no additional cost to the City Council—are the creation of four customer service points (at the bus station, the operational base, La Mata, and the city center), as well as the expansion of the service with an additional 20,000 kilometers per year. Information screens will also be installed at all bus stops, reaching a total of 186 units.
In addition, new infrastructure will be developed, including dedicated facilities for electric buses, a washing tunnel for the fleet, and a high-capacity refueling station. All of this will be located on a 7,550-square-meter site designated for urban transport operations.
The new system will feature 12 bus lines: 9 daytime and 3 nighttime routes. Daytime services will operate from 7:00 a.m. to 10:30 p.m., extending to midnight during summer and Easter. Night services will run from 12:00 a.m. to 4:00 a.m. during peak season and weekends.
The fleet will consist of 32 vehicles, 26 of which will be hybrid and 6 fully electric, all equipped with safety systems and onboard digital technology to improve service management and user experience.
The new model is expected to exceed 3.37 million passengers annually, thanks to improved frequencies and expanded routes. Fare options will include a single ticket (€1.50), multi-trip passes, monthly passes, a tourist card, and the “Bono Oro,” which offers free travel for residents over 65, pensioners, and people with disabilities.
Mayor Eduardo Dolón stated that this project represents a significant step toward a more modern, efficient public transport system adapted to the city’s growth. He also highlighted that it will improve connectivity between neighborhoods, reduce reliance on private vehicles, and promote a more sustainable mobility model.
With this 10-year concession, Torrevieja aims to establish a public transport system ready to meet both current and future needs.
