Torrevieja participates in the 'Sumando' project of the European Urban Initiatives program
The project aims to install intelligent cameras for license plate recognition and environmental surveillance cameras to monitor traffic anomalies. The Local Government Board (JGL) approved today, October 11, the proposal for Torrevieja to join the European Urban Initiatives Program, known as “Sumando.”
Federico Alarcón, secretary-councilor of the JGL, and Gitte Lund, councilor for Relations with the European Union and European Funds, presented this program. The installation of the cameras will enable real-time analysis of urban mobility, improving road safety and circulation efficiency.
European funding has been requested to carry out the “Sumando” project, with a budget of 5,085,218 euros, of which the Torrevieja City Council is seeking a grant of 4,067,374 euros.
The European Urban Initiative is a funding program that supports cities with more than 50,000 inhabitants in developing capacities, innovation, and solutions for urban challenges relevant to the EU.
This call aims to promote innovative actions that generate transferable and scalable solutions to address sustainable urban development issues and improve the capacities of cities in designing participatory policies and strategies.
The Torrevieja City Council aims to optimize urban traffic management and enhance safety, especially during periods of high tourist influx. To achieve this, it is necessary to renew the video surveillance system by implementing an innovative system that allows data collection for quick decision-making that responds to mobility needs.
With the possibility of including the installation of intelligent cameras for license plate recognition and traffic surveillance, it has been decided to request EU funding for the “Sumando” project, which involves universities, private companies, and associations, and has the support of the General Directorate of Traffic (DGT).
