Municipal Investment of 31,001 Euros to Repair the Pedestrian Footbridge over the Acequión Canal
Following the installation of the new paving stones, the final railings will be installed on the pedestrian footbridge in the coming days. The Councilor for Urban Services of the Torrevieja City Council reports that repair work on the pedestrian footbridge crossing the Acequión Canal began last Saturday, with a municipal investment of 31,001 euros. After the installation of the new paving stones was completed, the final railings on both sides of the bridge will be installed in the coming days.
The repair work included the demolition and removal of the pre-stressed slabs that formed the footbridge, as well as the removal of the existing railing. A new deck, consisting of two prefabricated hollow-core slabs measuring 30 cm thick and 120 cm long, was then installed, resting on the existing beams. Finally, new railings will be installed with hot-dip galvanization treatment to ensure high resistance to rust.
THREE REQUESTS FROM THE CITY COUNCIL TO REPAIR THE FOOTBRIDGE
In March 2024, the Torrevieja City Council requested authorization from the Provincial Coastal Service, under the Ministry for Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge (MITECO), to urgently repair the pedestrian footbridge over the Acequión Canal at the height of Paseo Maestro Velero, as it is located within the Public Maritime-Terrestrial Domain.
This initial request was denied, requiring the municipal technical services to reformulate the technical report according to the requirements set by the Coastal Service.
During the process of drafting the new request, the railings on one side of the footbridge detached, which forced the City Council to approach the Coastal Service again to request authorization to remove the fallen elements and to inform them about the closure and fencing of the footbridge to prevent pedestrian access.
In this situation, the City Council was once again awaiting a response from the Provincial Coastal Service to proceed with the removal of the detached elements. Once authorization was received, these elements were removed.
Finally, the City Council submitted a third request that included the technical report by the Coastal Service’s requirements to obtain authorization for the repair. In July, the Torrevieja City Council received a favorable response and was able to initiate the contracting process for the execution of the works, which, after the necessary administrative procedures, were awarded through an urgent works contract for an amount of 31,001€ (including VAT).
