This summer, Torrevieja joins the challenge to obtain the green flag of hospitality sustainability from Ecovidrio

The Torrevieja City Council and 168 hospitality establishments in the area will compete this summer for the Green Flag for Sustainability awarded by Ecovidrio. This non-profit organization, responsible for managing glass container recycling in Spain, is celebrating the fifth edition of #GreenFlagsMovement, a summer campaign aimed at highlighting and rewarding the commitment of local hospitality businesses and municipalities to glass recycling, environmental protection, and sustainable development.

Torrevieja will compete with 40 municipalities from the Valencian Community to win the "Green Flag for Sustainability" from Ecovidrio, which was awarded to l’Alfas del Pi and Finestrat in the previous edition of this initiative.

So far, 168 restaurants, bars, and beach bars in Torrevieja have joined this initiative in collaboration with the City Council and Ecovidrio.

This year, Ecovidrio will also recognize the two most responsible and committed hospitality establishments in the Valencian Community, evaluating their initiatives to improve waste recycling management, energy and water consumption, and sustainable purchasing, among other variables. In the last edition, the awarded establishments were Casa Montaña (Valencia) and Hydra (Calpe, Alicante). Additionally, as a novelty this year, the winning establishments will receive an invitation for two people to attend a Master Class and enjoy a tasting of several dishes prepared by a renowned chef with a Green Michelin Star.

The Green Flags Movement is a campaign in which Ecovidrio collaborates every summer with municipalities and hospitality businesses to address the high consumption of glass containers in Spain's coastal areas during this season. In summer, one-third of the glass containers circulated are consumed, and nearly 50% of single-use glass container waste is generated by the hospitality sector. To support the hospitality industry, Ecovidrio will deploy a team of environmental educators to provide resources, information, and incentives to the HORECA sector along the Spanish coast.

A Consolidated Project in Favor of Sustainability on Our Coasts

The Green Flags Movement has become a key initiative for Ecovidrio in its collaboration with the hospitality sector. Nationally, this fifth edition will feature participation from over 156 coastal municipalities across five different autonomous communities and more than 16,000 hospitality establishments, all competing for the nine awards that Ecovidrio will present nationwide.
