Torrevieja will have the Smoke-Free Beaches flag for the first time

It is an initiative of the General Directorate of Public Health, in which the City Council collaborates through its departments of Beaches, Environment, and Public Health. For the first time, Torrevieja will receive the Smoke-Free Beaches flag, thanks to this initiative in which the City Council actively participates through its departments of Beaches and Public Health.

The mayor of Torrevieja, Eduardo Dolón, received this flag from José Antonio García Navarro, head of the Public Health Center of the Orihuela Area, accompanied by the Councilor for Public Health, Rosa Cañón, and the Councilor for Beaches and Environment, Antonio Vidal.

Eduardo Dolón announced that the first Smoke-Free Beaches flag will be raised at Cabo Cervera beach, and another one at the outdoor pool of the Sports City, even though smoking is already prohibited at this pool. Additionally, informative signs will be placed at the beach entrances for all bathers to see. The City Council intends to expand this pilot project to other beaches in Torrevieja soon.

This initiative aims to raise awareness among citizens about the importance of keeping beaches clean, safe, and pleasant for everyone. There will be no penalties, but users will be informed that the goal is to provide smoke-free beaches where they can enjoy fresh air, play in the sand, swim in the sea, and participate in outdoor activities without worrying about tobacco smoke.

Furthermore, this initiative sends an important message to children and young people about the commitment to their well-being and the promotion of healthy habits. It also contributes to the global fight against pollution, as cigarette butts are a common form of litter on our beaches, and their removal will not only improve the aesthetics of our coasts but also protect marine life from the harmful effects of these wastes.
